Alamo City School has an academic library which exists to support the reading curriculum of our Pre-K-6th grade curriculum. Along with this we encourage the love of reading through incentive based Accelerated Reader. ACS has 2 certified librarians on staff to serve students and faculty. We have 7,000 books in our inventory to serve a school that has over 600 children. The standard for the state of Tennessee is 10 books per child. We are very proud of our collection, however, currently we do not have 10 Accelerated Reader books per child and that is one of our main goals.
Our library has a section for Easy Readers to serve our emergent readers. We pride ourselves on having a non fiction section that is up to date, which encompasses the most current scientific facts, and is designed to correlate with our Science and Social Studies curriculum. Our fiction section provides the latest, most popular, and award winning titles which are appropriate for elementary aged students. We have currently added to our reference section a set of 2007 Encyclopedias. Our library subscribes to 24 periodicals for children which are available during their library visit. We also supplement our teacher resources with 12 professional publications. Through technology, our card catalog is available to every teacher and student throughout the school. For the conveince of our students we have an open checkout every afternoon, and for the convience of our parents we have our Accelerated Reader Quiz List available on the front page of our website. Our latest venture, which began 3 years ago, is a teacher resource room which is our most popular feature for new teachers. We are currently beginning to switch our VCR collection to DVDs to remain current with the technology of the day. In the spring of every school year we have a Bookfair in which all of the proceeds go to supplement our library program by purchasing books, AR tests, teacher resources, and audio visuals. We invite you to participate in our school bookfair which is usually scheduled during Spring Parent Teacher Conference. We gladly accept memorials and donations to our library fund. Through the generosity of our administration we have what we consider one of the best library programs for elementary students in the county. We invite you to come and visit. |
